Measurement and statistical analysis
of those parameters related with the atmospheric turbulence are crucial for the
selection and characterization of best astronomical observing sites. These
parameters require continuously monitoring and updating.
The Instituto de Astrofísica de
Canarias (IAC) has long been aware of the
importance of promoting initiatives for the characterization and protection of
the Observarorio del Roque de los Muchachos (ORM) on La
Palma, and the Observatorio del Teide (OT) on Tenerife.
For this purpose, in the late 80's a Sky Quality Group (

) was created as well as a
technical office for sky protection (OTPC).
This website has been set up to
provide detailed information and statistics
about meteorological and seeing data at different locations at the Canarian
Observatories, by means of different instruments and campaigns. Data
files and charts are also available, as well as other related information.
The Site Characterization study is funded by the IAC and co-funded by EECC FP6 programme (ELT telescope design study, also IAC Web Page ) , Opticon (Optical
Infrared Co-ordination Network for Astronomy), Co-ordination
and Integration of ENO facilities.
